Production Notes on Strike the Match

Client: Wondersmith Audio

A conversation with Daniel Fox, of Wondersmith Audio, on his approach to producing Billy Wylder's album "Strike the Match" — taking a look at how Dan crafted the contrasting drum sounds on the album, and diving into how he built the bridge on the song "Fourth of July" into what he terms "ear candy."

This project was a bit of an experiment. We had already captured footage of Billy Wylder while they were recording, and after the album was released Dan approached us about collaborating on a short film that documented the process of moving from the recording session into the production phase. Initially we were going to look at multiple tracks, but it soon became clear we had a lot of material, and "Fourth of July" was a good place to put our focus. What was initially planned as a short 3 - 5 minute piece became a 12:00+ opus on the attention to detail and layered, thoughtful approach Dan takes to his work.

  • "I met Avi a few years ago. And I really appreciated the genre mixing that he's in to: the blending of bluesy, folksy styles with rock and electronic elements — a really forward thinking, open minded musical approach. Later he asked me if I'd work on the album, "Strike the Match" so we spent a week in Rhode Island recording at Eyeland Studios. The song "Fourth of July" was actually recorded on the fourth of July, we finished laying down all the basic tracks for it right at midnight with fireworks happening all around us."
