Remembering A Master:
Kanai Sensei

Client: New England Aikikai

Brought together for a series of portraits, the instructors of New England Aikikai made the afternoon into a training seminar in honor of Kanai Sensei, the long time Chief Instructor of their dojo who passed away in 2004.

Mitsunari Kanai Shihan was a student of the founder of Aikido, Professor Morihei Ueshiba, and for ten years was his live-in apprentice studying Aikido intensively. Kanai Sensei was an 8th degree black belt in Aikido, and was equally skilled in other Japanese martial arts including the use of swords and staff.

Kanai Sensei was sent to Boston in 1966 by the Aikido World Headquarters in Tokyo and he taught at New England Aikikai until his death in 2004. His spirit is still felt in the dojo, as is the reverence his past students still hold for him.

  • "Reigi-saho is to sit and bow perfectly and with dignity. In this ... there exists the martial artist's expression of self resulting from his or her philosophy of life and death. And, for this reason, the martial artist shows merciful care and concern for those who walk on the same path. The martial artist shows merciful care and concern for all who seek to develop themselves in mind, body, and spirit, with sincere respect for other human lives."
